I’ve been in the process of creating two research papers on the topic of anarchism. One contemporary episode that definetely stands out is the November 30th, 1999 WTO conference in Seattle. It was in that time and place that thousands protested against the World Trade Organization’s conference and succeeded in delaying it. However, things took a very hostile turn when a section of anarchists organized in a “black bloc,” that is, when many anarchists band together wearing all black (so as not to be identified by police,) and travel in a sort of turtle-formation and engage in private property destruction and street warfare with riot police. The bloc’s targets included Starbucks, Nike, Planet Hollywood and others and they succeeded in destroying a lot of corporate property. However, as soon as this was done, riot police then used this violence as an excuse to lash out against protestors- both violent and pacifist. It was on this day that Seattle looked less like the USA that prides itself on free-speech and more like a goddamn police state. What follows is the black bloc’s response to the open public on the events of “N30.”
